Adopted as an orphan, Fu Yao served as a slave for the Xuan Yuan sect in the Taiyuan Kingdom. After a series of tragedies, she journeyed across the lands in search of ways to lift the curse that blighted her life. Along the way, she meets the Crown Prince of Tianquan, Zhang Sun Wu Ji, and falls in love with him.

The Polish artist Julia and her husband Piotr, a talented and successful composer, live in Kraków. When Julias's mother, Barbara falls ill with stomach cancer, the life of the family is falling apart. Julia accompanies her mother to death, but her husband Piotr is at rehearsals in Cologne and leaves her to cope with this difficult situation. Only her friend Adrian is at her side. Her father Jurek is also overwhelmed by the impending loss of his beloved wife. After the death of the mother her father takes comfort from alcohol. Shortly after the father dies. Julia found only in the arms of Adrian to rest, but this in turn destroyed her marriage to Piotr. After the loss of the parents and breakup of the marriage she is now alone in the world with an uncertain future where Adrian is of little help.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

The main protagonist is played by Julia Jentsch, an actress known for her roles in The Edukators, Sophie Scholl - The Last Days and I Served the King of England. She is partnered by Andrzej Hudziak, the winner of the Best Actor Award at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in 2006 for A Few People, a Little Time by Andrzej Baranski.

Szumowska drew attention for her first film, Happy Man, nominated fir the European Film Award. She followed it with Stranger (Ono), a story about pregnancy and motherhood, starring Małgorzata Bela, a model. 33 Scenes From Life is her third full-length feature. The director once again works with cinematographer Michał Englert.

33 Scenes From Life is a Polish-German co-production. Germany is represented by Pandora Filmproduktion GmbH-Koln, and Poland by STI Studio Filmowe Sp. z o. o. The Polish Film Institute granted a subsidy of 1.8 million zlotys. The production was also supported by Film Stiftung NRW and Mediadesk. The film will be distributed in Poland by Kinoswiat, opening in November 2008.
