Well i tryed the Third age mod and i cant say that i liked it very much. It was very 'Slabby' fightingstils, and an army of 300 soldiers died in like one minute.
Like if every soldier went on a single hit, no matter the unit. I fund the game to be a little too 'Quick' if you ask me. it took away the fun in strategic battlestils, it was more like; 'okay,.. i send in the rest of the trups and hope that i win'. And that was it. So sorry but no that is not a good mod for this game.
I am my self here on the hunt for mods aswell, so by all meens try the mods third age, but if you are a LOTR fan, you really should not..

Slabby ?Dont know the meaning .
It all depends on one aspect , in what level you usually play campaigns or what level you play that one ?

The best mod really depends on what you are looking to do with the game..
If you like vanilla but think there are too many bugs then try - Lands to Conquer Gold
If you want something that is challenging and more authentic historically then try either Stainless Steel 6.3+6.4 OR Broken Crecent.
Stainless Steel looks beautiful. The Orthodox factions look awsome, many more units for all factions. Well balanced, lots of cool new features, relatively stable. And game mechanics changed up (missile effects, cavalry charges etc). Also, there is a focus on peasent/militia units that make up the bulk of armies just like in RL. In the earlier period, Cavalry is the main focus and cavalry has been overhauled to be much more effective. Even mounted seargents have a role in early campaign. The knights and heavy armoured infantry is more rare but is a powerful unit on the battlefield.
I have limited experience with Broken Crescent (due to CTDs) but they seem to focus more on Eastern factions which look very good. And they added in the Bulgars, who I think are an important faction. But this mod is also worth a try. Also, both these mods slow down combat significantly a
I would give both of these a try if you are looking for something new and exciting and decide which one you like more.
Also, Lands to Conquer gold is a must have because it seems like the same things as Vanilla but many bugs and problems have been ironed out offering a satisfying game.
